Types of DAS to Boost Cell Phone Signal.

As mobile operators strive to improve services to their customers, in building DAS is becoming the standard solution to provide cellphone reception inside a building.

Why Cant I Get Cell Phone Signal In My Building?

The construction process for many new buildings means that cell phone signals, which can easily be picked up by your cell phone outside the building, are not able to penetrate into the building. A Distributed Antenna System (DAS) is a network of small antennas distributed throughout a building that can rebroadcast the signal recieved from a carrier.

A properly designed, approved and installed DAS installation will provide quality cell phone signal for ALL carriers throughout your building though the network of distributed antennas. The image above shows a DAS installation designed by Telcosat for a ten floor building. Each floor typically has 4 antennas and a distribution box on each level. The repeater was installed in the basement.

What Are The Types Of DAS?

There are three types of DAS installations categorized as Passive DAS, Active DAS, or a Hybrid DAS. See the links above under the tab "TYPES OF DAS" to discover which type of DAS is best for your situation. In general the size of your building will govern the type of DAS that will be installed.

Narrow Band or Wide Band DAS?

In addition to the categories of DAS we can further classify the technology used in the DAS, specifically the cell phone booster, also called a cell phone repeater. The classification of booster is either narrow band which means the booster, and by inference the DAS, will only operate in a specific frequency band, and more appropriately only for a particular network operator, for example Bell or AT&T or TELUS, but not all of them at once. Each network provider's signal will require a separate and dedicated booster.

The other classification of cell phone booster is a called a wide band booster, or Host Neutral booster. This type of booster operates across a wide band of the frequency spectrum and will boost all signals for all carriers in the same frequency range. For this reason the booster is often called Host Neutral, in other words it will boost the signal from Bell and AT&T and Telus, and any other supplier all at the same time and using one booster.
